Ryzen 9 5980HX vs Core i7-12700H comparison
In our benchmarks, the Ryzen 9 5980HX beats the Core i7-12700H in overall performance. Despite this, the Core i7-12700H has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Core i7-12700H has significantly more cores than the Ryzen 9 5980HX. Indeed, the Core i7-12700H has 14 cores compared to 8 cores found in the Ryzen 9 5980HX. It also has more threads than the Ryzen 9 5980HX. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 9 5980HX has a significantly higher clock speed than the Core i7-12700H. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5980HX has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
