Core i9-10900 vs Ryzen 9 5980HX specs and performance

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i9-10900 performs better than the Ryzen 9 5980HX. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Ryzen 9 5980HX in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i9-10900 has slightly more cores with 10 cores compared to the Ryzen 9 5980HX that has 8 cores. It also has more threads than the Ryzen 9 5980HX. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 9 5980HX has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i9-10900. Despite this, the Core i9-10900 has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Ryzen 9 5980HX outputs less heat than Core i9-10900 thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5980HX has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i9-10900. Despite this, the Core i9-10900 has slightly more L3 cache compared to the Ryzen 9 5980HX.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Core i9-10900 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
