Core i7-7700 vs Core i5-8400H comparison

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i5-8400H performs better than the Core i7-7700. Despite this, the Core i7-7700 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

Our spec comparison shows that they have an identical amount of cores and the same number of threads. With our hardware info, we find that the Core i7-7700 has a significantly higher clock speed than the Core i5-8400H. Furthermore, both these CPUs have identical turbo speeds. The Core i5-8400H outputs less heat than Core i7-7700 thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. When comparing cache sizes, these CPUs have an identical amount of L2 cache. The Core i5-8400H also has significantly more L3 cache.

The more cores a CPU has, the better the overall performance will be in parallel workloads such as multitasking. Many CPUs have more threads than cores, this means that each physical core is split into multiple logical cores, making them more efficient. Indeed, the Core i7-7700 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
