Core i5-8400H vs Core i3-1215U specs and performance

According to the hardwareDB Benchmark tool, the Core i5-8400H is faster than the Core i3-1215U. Despite this, the Core i3-1215U has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

With info from our database, we find that the Core i3-1215U has significantly more cores with 6 cores whereas the Core i5-8400H has 4 cores. But they both have the same number of threads. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the Core i5-8400H has a significantly higher clock speed compared to the Core i3-1215U. Despite this, the Core i3-1215U has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Core i3-1215U outputs less heat than Core i5-8400H thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. In terms of cache, the Core i3-1215U has significantly more L2 cache when compared to the Core i5-8400H. Despite this, the Core i5-8400H has slightly more L3 cache compared to the Core i3-1215U.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Core i5-8400H has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
