Core i3-9100 vs Core i5-8400H comparison

In our benchmarks, the Core i5-8400H beats the Core i3-9100 in overall performance. Despite this, the Core i3-9100 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

Our spec comparison shows that they have an identical amount of cores but the Core i5-8400H has more threads. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the Core i3-9100 has a significantly higher clock speed compared to the Core i5-8400H. In addition, both chips have the same turbo speed. The Core i5-8400H outputs less heat than Core i3-9100 thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The data shows that both these CPUs have same sized L2 caches. The Core i5-8400H also has significantly more L3 cache.

Modern CPUs generally have more logical cores than physical cores, this means that each core is split into multiple virtual cores, improving efficiency for parallel workloads. For instance, the Core i3-9100 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
