Xeon E5-620 vs Xeon E3-1225 V2 specs and performance

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Xeon E3-1225 V2 performs better than the Xeon E5-620. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Xeon E5-620 in all gaming tests too.

When comparing these CPUs we notice that they have the same number of cores but the Xeon E5-620 has more threads. With our hardware info, we find that the Xeon E3-1225 V2 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Xeon E5-620. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Xeon E3-1225 V2 has significantly more L2 cache than the Xeon E5-620. The Xeon E3-1225 V2 also has significantly more L3 cache.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Xeon E5-620 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
