Xeon E5-2697 v3 vs EPYC 74F3 specs and performance
In our benchmarks, the Xeon E5-2697 v3 beats the EPYC 74F3 in overall performance. Despite this, the EPYC 74F3 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Xeon E5-2697 v3 has significantly more cores than the EPYC 74F3. Indeed, the Xeon E5-2697 v3 has 14 cores compared to 9 cores found in the EPYC 74F3. It also has more threads than the EPYC 74F3. With our hardware info, we find that the EPYC 74F3 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Xeon E5-2697 v3. A Xeon E5-2697 v3 CPU outputs less heat than a EPYC 74F3 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Xeon E5-2697 v3 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
