Xeon E5-2690 v3 vs Xeon W-2145 specs and performance

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Xeon E5-2690 v3 performs better than the Xeon W-2145. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Xeon W-2145 in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Xeon E5-2690 v3 has significantly more cores with 12 cores compared to the Xeon W-2145 that has 8 cores. It also has more threads than the Xeon W-2145. With our hardware info, we find that the Xeon W-2145 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Xeon E5-2690 v3. Also, the Xeon W-2145 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Xeon E5-2690 v3 CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon W-2145 CPU because of its slightly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Xeon E5-2690 v3 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
