Xeon E3-1231 v3 vs Xeon E5-2687W specs and performance
In our benchmarks, the Xeon E5-2687W beats the Xeon E3-1231 v3 in overall performance. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Xeon E3-1231 v3 in all gaming tests too.
With info from our database, we find that the Xeon E5-2687W has significantly more cores with 8 cores whereas the Xeon E3-1231 v3 has 4 cores. It also has more threads than the Xeon E3-1231 v3. Our comparison shows that the Xeon E3-1231 v3 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Xeon E5-2687W. In addition, both chips have the same turbo speed. A Xeon E3-1231 v3 CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon E5-2687W CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Xeon E3-1231 v3 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
