Ryzen Threadripper 3960X vs Core i5-8400 comparison

In our benchmarks, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X beats the Core i5-8400 in overall performance. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Core i5-8400 in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has significantly more cores with 24 cores compared to the Core i5-8400 that has 6 cores. It also has more threads than the Core i5-8400. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i5-8400. Also, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Core i5-8400 outputs less heat than Ryzen Threadripper 3960X thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i5-8400. The Ryzen Threadripper 3960X also has significantly more L3 cache.

The more cores a CPU has, the better the overall performance will be in parallel workloads such as multitasking. Many CPUs have more threads than cores, this means that each physical core is split into multiple logical cores, making them more efficient. Indeed, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
