Ryzen 9 7900 vs Ryzen 5 8400F specs and performance

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Ryzen 9 7900 performs better than the Ryzen 5 8400F. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Ryzen 5 8400F in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Ryzen 9 7900 has significantly more cores with 12 cores compared to the Ryzen 5 8400F that has 6 cores. It also has more threads than the Ryzen 5 8400F. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 5 8400F has a slightly higher clock speed than the Ryzen 9 7900. Despite this, the Ryzen 9 7900 has a slightly higher turbo speed. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 7900 has significantly more L2 cache than the Ryzen 5 8400F. The Ryzen 9 7900 also has significantly more L3 cache.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 7900 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
