Ryzen 9 5900X vs Ryzen 7 5800X3D benchmarks

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Ryzen 9 5900X performs better than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Ryzen 9 5900X has significantly more cores with 12 cores compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D that has 8 cores. It also has more threads than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Our comparison shows that the Ryzen 9 5900X has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Also, the Ryzen 9 5900X has a slightly higher turbo speed. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5900X has significantly more L2 cache than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Despite this, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has significantly more L3 cache compared to the Ryzen 9 5900X.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5900X has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
