Ryzen 9 5900X vs Core i7-12800HX comparison
In our benchmarks, the Ryzen 9 5900X beats the Core i7-12800HX in overall performance. Despite this, the Core i7-12800HX has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
With info from our database, we find that the Core i7-12800HX has slightly more cores with 16 cores whereas the Ryzen 9 5900X has 12 cores. But they both have the same number of threads. Our comparison shows that the Ryzen 9 5900X has a significantly higher clock speed compared to the Core i7-12800HX. In addition, both chips have the same turbo speed. The Core i7-12800HX outputs less heat than Ryzen 9 5900X thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5900X has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i7-12800HX. The Ryzen 9 5900X also has significantly more L3 cache.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 5900X has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
