Ryzen 9 3950X vs Xeon Platinum 8170M specs and performance
In our benchmarks, the Xeon Platinum 8170M beats the Ryzen 9 3950X in overall performance. Despite this, the Ryzen 9 3950X has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Xeon Platinum 8170M has significantly more cores than the Ryzen 9 3950X. Indeed, the Xeon Platinum 8170M has 26 cores compared to 16 cores found in the Ryzen 9 3950X. It also has more threads than the Ryzen 9 3950X. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 9 3950X has a significantly higher clock speed than the Xeon Platinum 8170M. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Xeon Platinum 8170M has significantly more L2 cache than the Ryzen 9 3950X. Despite this, the Ryzen 9 3950X has significantly more L3 cache compared to the Xeon Platinum 8170M.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 9 3950X has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
