Ryzen 7 3700U vs Core i7-9700 benchmarks

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i7-9700 performs better than the Ryzen 7 3700U. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Ryzen 7 3700U in all gaming tests too.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i7-9700 has significantly more cores with 8 cores compared to the Ryzen 7 3700U that has 4 cores. But they both have the same number of threads. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the Core i7-9700 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Ryzen 7 3700U. Also, the Core i7-9700 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Ryzen 7 3700U CPU outputs less heat than a Core i7-9700 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The data shows that both these CPUs have same sized L2 caches. The Core i7-9700 also has significantly more L3 cache.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Ryzen 7 3700U has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
