Ryzen 5 3500X vs Core i5-6400 comparison

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Ryzen 5 3500X performs better than the Core i5-6400. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Core i5-6400 in all gaming tests too.

In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Ryzen 5 3500X has significantly more cores than the Core i5-6400. Indeed, the Ryzen 5 3500X has 6 cores compared to 4 cores found in the Core i5-6400. It also has more threads than the Core i5-6400. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 5 3500X has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i5-6400. Also, the Ryzen 5 3500X has a slightly higher turbo speed. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. In terms of cache, the Ryzen 5 3500X has significantly more L2 cache when compared to the Core i5-6400. The Ryzen 5 3500X also has significantly more L3 cache.

The more cores a CPU has, the better the overall performance will be in parallel workloads such as multitasking. Many CPUs have more threads than cores, this means that each physical core is split into multiple logical cores, making them more efficient. For instance, the Ryzen 5 3500X has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
