RTX 2070 vs RTX 3060 compared and tested

In this analysis, we will compare two mid-range NVIDIA GPUs: the GeForce RTX 2070 and the GeForce RTX 3060. A 20 series GPU based on the Turing architecture and an 30 series GPU based on the Ampere architecture.

The GeForce RTX 2070 is a mid-range GPU released in 2018 with a benchmark score of 49% in our benchmark. It features a core clock of 1410 MHz, a boost clock of 1620 MHz, and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit memory bus. On the other hand, the GeForce RTX 3060 is a more recent GPU released in 2021 with a benchmark score of 51%. It has a core clock of 1320 MHz, a boost clock of 1777 MHz, and 12 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit memory bus.

In terms of benchmark scores, the GeForce RTX 3060 outperforms the GeForce RTX 2070 in most categories. The RTX 3060 scores higher in Geekbench 5 and 6, 3DMark Graphics, and Blender benchmarks. However, the RTX 2070 performs better in Geekbench 6 (Vulkan) and Geekbench 5 (OpenCL) benchmarks. When it comes to game benchmarks at 1440p resolution, the RTX 3060 generally outperforms the RTX 2070 in most games, except for Rainbow Six Siege and Watch Dogs: Legion.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Doom Eternal, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Death Stranding are some games where the RTX 3060 performs significantly better than the RTX 2070. The RTX 3060 also has a higher average frame rate in Horizon Zero Dawn, PUBG, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, the RTX 2070 performs slightly better in Cyberpunk 2077, Rainbow Six Siege, and Watch Dogs: Legion.

When it comes to power consumption, both GPUs have a TDP in the range of 170 to 175W, which means they ideally would have a power supply with at least 550W. However, the RTX 3060 has a more power-efficient architecture than the RTX 2070, which means it consumes less power while providing better performance. In many regards, the RTX 3060 is a more refined RTX 2070.

In terms of pricing, the RTX 3060 is more expensive than the RTX 2070, but it also provides better performance and more memory. The RTX 2070 is still a capable GPU, but it's not the latest and greatest any more.

In conclusion, the GeForce RTX 3060 is a better GPU than the GeForce RTX 2070 in most categories. It provides better performance, more memory, and better power efficiency. However, the RTX 2070 still performs well in some benchmarks and games and might be a more affordable option if you can get one at the right price.
