Core i7-9700 vs Ryzen 5 7640U specs and performance
Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i7-9700 performs better than the Ryzen 5 7640U. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Ryzen 5 7640U in all gaming tests too.
When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i7-9700 has slightly more cores with 8 cores compared to the Ryzen 5 7640U that has 6 cores. Despite this, the Ryzen 5 7640U has more threads than the Core i7-9700. With our hardware info, we find that the Ryzen 5 7640U has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i7-9700. Also, the Ryzen 5 7640U has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Ryzen 5 7640U outputs less heat than Core i7-9700 thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. In terms of cache, the Ryzen 5 7640U has significantly more L2 cache when compared to the Core i7-9700. The Ryzen 5 7640U also has slightly more L3 cache.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i7-9700 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
