Core i7-8700 vs Xeon E3-1230 V2 comparison
In our benchmarks, the Core i7-8700 beats the Xeon E3-1230 V2 in overall performance. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Xeon E3-1230 V2 in all gaming tests too.
When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i7-8700 has significantly more cores with 6 cores compared to the Xeon E3-1230 V2 that has 4 cores. It also has more threads than the Xeon E3-1230 V2. With our hardware info, we find that the Xeon E3-1230 V2 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i7-8700. The info from our database shows that the Core i7-8700 has more L2 cache than the Xeon E3-1230 V2. The Core i7-8700 also has significantly more L3 cache.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Core i7-8700 has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
