Core i7-2820QM vs Xeon E3-1220 specs and performance

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i7-2820QM performs better than the Xeon E3-1220. Despite this, the Xeon E3-1220 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

Info from our database shows that they both have the same core count but the Core i7-2820QM has more threads. With our hardware info, we find that the Xeon E3-1220 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i7-2820QM. Furthermore, both these CPUs have identical turbo speeds. A Core i7-2820QM CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon E3-1220 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. Indeed, the Core i7-2820QM has more threads than cores. Each physical core is split into multiple threads.
