Core i5-8500 vs Core i7-9700 specs and performance

In our benchmarks, the Core i7-9700 beats the Core i5-8500 in overall performance. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Core i5-8500 in all gaming tests too.

In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Core i7-9700 has slightly more cores than the Core i5-8500. Indeed, the Core i7-9700 has 8 cores compared to 6 cores found in the Core i5-8500. It also has more threads than the Core i5-8500. In terms of clock speed, the Core i5-8500 and Core i7-9700 are identical in this regard. Despite this, the Core i7-9700 has a slightly higher turbo speed. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The info from our database shows that the Core i7-9700 has more L2 cache than the Core i5-8500. The Core i7-9700 also has slightly more L3 cache.

The more cores a CPU has, the better the overall performance will be in parallel workloads such as multitasking. Many CPUs have more threads than cores, this means that each physical core is split into multiple logical cores, making them more efficient. For instance, the Core i5-8500 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
