Core i5-8400T vs Core i7-6700T comparison

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i7-6700T performs better than the Core i5-8400T. Despite this, the Core i5-8400T has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i5-8400T has significantly more cores with 6 cores compared to the Core i7-6700T that has 4 cores. Despite this, the Core i7-6700T has more threads than the Core i5-8400T. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the Core i7-6700T has a significantly higher clock speed compared to the Core i5-8400T. Also, the Core i7-6700T has a slightly higher turbo speed. Both these chips have an identical TDP (Thermal Design Power). This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The info from our database shows that the Core i5-8400T has more L2 cache than the Core i7-6700T. The Core i5-8400T also has slightly more L3 cache.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-8400T has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
