Core i5-8400 vs Xeon E5-2650 v2 specs and performance
In our benchmarks, the Xeon E5-2650 v2 beats the Core i5-8400 in overall performance. Despite this, the Core i5-8400 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Xeon E5-2650 v2 has slightly more cores with 8 cores compared to the Core i5-8400 that has 6 cores. It also has more threads than the Core i5-8400. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the Core i5-8400 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Xeon E5-2650 v2. Also, the Core i5-8400 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Core i5-8400 CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon E5-2650 v2 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-8400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
