Core i5-8400 vs Xeon E3-1270 v6 benchmarks
According to the hardwareDB Benchmark tool, the Core i5-8400 is faster than the Xeon E3-1270 v6. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Xeon E3-1270 v6 in all gaming tests too.
With info from our database, we find that the Core i5-8400 has significantly more cores with 6 cores whereas the Xeon E3-1270 v6 has 4 cores. Despite this, the Xeon E3-1270 v6 has more threads than the Core i5-8400. Our comparison shows that the Xeon E3-1270 v6 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Core i5-8400. Also, the Xeon E3-1270 v6 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Core i5-8400 CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon E3-1270 v6 CPU because of its slightly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. In terms of cache, the Core i5-8400 has significantly more L2 cache when compared to the Xeon E3-1270 v6. The Core i5-8400 also has slightly more L3 cache.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-8400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
