Core i5-8400 vs Core i7-4790 comparison

In our benchmarks, the Core i5-8400 beats the Core i7-4790 in overall performance. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the Core i7-4790 in all gaming tests too.

With info from our database, we find that the Core i5-8400 has significantly more cores with 6 cores whereas the Core i7-4790 has 4 cores. Despite this, the Core i7-4790 has more threads than the Core i5-8400. With our hardware info, we find that the Core i7-4790 has a slightly higher clock speed than the Core i5-8400. In addition, both chips have the same turbo speed. A Core i5-8400 CPU outputs less heat than a Core i7-4790 CPU because of its slightly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The info from our database shows that the Core i5-8400 has more L2 cache than the Core i7-4790. The Core i5-8400 also has slightly more L3 cache.

Modern CPUs generally have more logical cores than physical cores, this means that each core is split into multiple virtual cores, improving efficiency for parallel workloads. For instance, the Core i5-8400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
