Core i5-7400 vs Xeon E5-2640 specs and performance
Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Xeon E5-2640 performs better than the Core i5-7400. Despite this, the Core i5-7400 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
In terms of the number of cores of each of these CPUs, the Xeon E5-2640 has significantly more cores than the Core i5-7400. Indeed, the Xeon E5-2640 has 6 cores compared to 4 cores found in the Core i5-7400. It also has more threads than the Core i5-7400. Our comparison shows that the Core i5-7400 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Xeon E5-2640. Also, the Core i5-7400 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Core i5-7400 CPU outputs less heat than a Xeon E5-2640 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Xeon E5-2640 has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i5-7400. The Xeon E5-2640 also has significantly more L3 cache.
Modern CPUs generally have more logical cores than physical cores, this means that each core is split into multiple virtual cores, improving efficiency for parallel workloads. For instance, the Core i5-7400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
