Core i5-7400 vs FX-4100 comparison

Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i5-7400 performs better than the FX-4100. Furthermore, our gaming benchmark shows that it also outperforms the FX-4100 in all gaming tests too.

With info from our database, we find that the Core i5-7400 has significantly more cores with 4 cores whereas the FX-4100 has 2 cores. But they both have the same number of threads. These CPUs have different clock speeds. Indeed, the FX-4100 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Core i5-7400. Also, the FX-4100 has a slightly higher turbo speed. A Core i5-7400 CPU outputs less heat than a FX-4100 CPU because of its significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the FX-4100 has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i5-7400. The FX-4100 also has slightly more L3 cache.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-7400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
