Core i5-6400 vs Core i7-4700MQ benchmarks
Our benchmark analysis concludes that the Core i7-4700MQ performs better than the Core i5-6400. Despite this, the Core i5-6400 has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.
Info from our database shows that they both have the same core count but the Core i7-4700MQ has more threads. Our comparison shows that the Core i5-6400 has a slightly higher clock speed compared to the Core i7-4700MQ. Despite this, the Core i7-4700MQ has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Core i7-4700MQ outputs less heat than Core i5-6400 thanks to a slightly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption. The cache sizes of these CPUs are different. Indeed, the Core i5-6400 has significantly more L2 cache than the Core i7-4700MQ. However, both these chips have the same amount of L3 cache.
Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-6400 has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
