Core i5-4440S vs Athlon Gold 7220U specs and performance

In our benchmarks, the Core i5-4440S beats the Athlon Gold 7220U in overall performance. Despite this, the Athlon Gold 7220U has the advantage in our gaming benchmark.

When comparing core counts for these CPUs, we notice that the Core i5-4440S has significantly more cores with 4 cores compared to the Athlon Gold 7220U that has 2 cores. But they both have the same number of threads. With our hardware info, we find that the Core i5-4440S has a slightly higher clock speed than the Athlon Gold 7220U. Despite this, the Athlon Gold 7220U has a slightly higher turbo speed. The Athlon Gold 7220U outputs less heat than Core i5-4440S thanks to a significantly lower TDP. This measures the amount of heat they output and can be used to estimate power consumption.

Most CPUs have more threads than cores. This technology, colloquially called hyperthreading, improves performance by splitting a core into multiple virtual ones. This provides more efficient utilisation of a core. For instance, the Core i5-4440S has the same number of threads as cores. This means the the CPU does not support hyperthreading.
